Liberia 101
- Liberia is located in western Africa, bordering the Atlantic Ocean. Liberia means "Land of the Free." It is only one of two nations in Africa that was not colonized by a European country.
- Since 2005, nearly 300,000 refugees and internally-displaced persons have returned to their homes after the end of a 14-year civil war.
- Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, president of Liberia, is Africa's first democratically-elected female president.
- Much of the population of Liberia lives in extreme poverty, with more than one-third of the population living on less than a dollar a day.
- 133 out of 1000 children under 5 years of age die each year.
