Rwanda 101
- Rwanda, known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills”, is located in South Eastern Africa.
- Rwanda is a very small country and could fit into Nova Scotia more than twice. It is also Africa’s most densely-populated country, with more than 318 people per square kilometre.
- Rwanda is still affected by the lingering impact of the 1994 genocide and the country is still in the process of rebuilding.
- More than half of the nation’s population is comprised of children. There are more than 800,000 children who have been orphaned, in part due to the genocide and the impact of HIV/AIDS.
- Malaria is the leading cause of illness and death in Rwanda: 152 out of 1000 children under 5 years of age die each year, with malaria accounting for 32 per cent of all deaths.
- Although many more Rwandans sleep under bed nets than do Liberians, the need still remains. There are an estimated 400,000 annual births in Rwanda; providing nets to expectant women and newborns will help protect against the disease.
