Jim Brennan, Captain, Toronto FC
Jim Brennan, the captain of Toronto FC, has always loved
soccer. At an early age, he moved from Toronto to
England with the hope of starting a
playing career. Once there, an opportunity arose to try out for Bristol City. Jim made the youth team in 1996 and
eventually worked his way up to the senior team, and to the starting
eleven.
In 1999, Jim was transferred to Nottingham Forest for £1.25 million – a record fee
for a Canadian-born player. He was also a member of Norwich FC and Southampton
FC until the end of the 2006 season, at which time he decided to return home to
Canada to play in front of family and
friends. Jim was the first player signed by Toronto FC in 2007, and has led the
team as captain ever since. He has also made 49 appearances on the international
stage playing for Team Canada.
Jim is a leader on and off the field who contributes
in the community wherever he can. He was honoured to be asked to represent
Spread the Net, and is a proud ambassador of this meaningful campaign to
increase awareness and eliminate malaria.
