Hayley Wickenheiser, Captain, Team Canada Women's Hockey
In addition to a world-record setting career as a professional hockey player, Hayley Wickenheiser has dedicated her free time to local, national and global volunteerism. A mother herself, Spread the Net resonated with Hayley as a Canadian initiative that has global impact in the fight against African children impacted by malaria.
A native of Shaunavon, Saskatchewan, Hayley Wickenheiser has lived in Calgary, Alberta for the past sixteen years where she not only trained, but also pursued a BSc degree at the University of Calgary. Her talent is unsurpassed. Having recently been named Team Captain, she was the Assistant Captain of Canada's gold medal-winning teams at the 2002 Salt Lake City and 2006 Torino Winter Olympics and named the MVP in both games. Wickenheiser is strong and skilled; a natural with a lethal slap shot and rightfully described as the greatest female hockey player in the world.

Last May, I had the opportunity to travel to Rwanda with Right To Play. On the trip, I saw and spoke to many people about the use and importance of bed nets. It was very apparent as we travelled the country that bednets are in need and in use by people in all different parts of Rwanda and Africa. To be in a country where 95% of the population is under the age of 35 made it increasingly evident that we must do what it takes to protect the children-the future leaders of Africa. To see firsthand the effects of HIV and Genocide and the complexities that come with overcoming those challenges, to have a real tangible way to protect them from one more challenge, Malaria, with a bed net, seems so simple. It is....10 BUCKS , SPREAD THE NET AND SAVE A LIFE!! Click here to view photo taken by Hayley in Rwanda.
